I'm using a 48x CD-ROM drive with iTunes 7 to import my music into mp3's, only it starts to copy at or around 2.5x, never going faster than 6x and sometimes dipping down to 0.2x.

I've used mostly store-bought music CD's, tried changing the bitrate, left iTunes as the only application running all with similar results. On a friend's computer (not that different from my own) they copy considerably faster. Could it be the drive's settings? iTunes doesn't seem to have settings for this.

My computer is running Windows XP SP2, Celeron 1.7GHz processor, 128MB DDR RAM.

There are many factors that could affect this. Memory, processor, blank media, and the burner itself all make a difference. Actually, 128mb ram IS NOT the minimum for Windows XP. I am on a customer's computer right now checking it out, and it only has 64mb ram. I have seen XP run on 32mb, but I don't think you can install with 32mb. Anyway, more ram would probably improve your speed some, but 128mb is enough to do what you are doing. If it slows in the middle of burning, I suspect the problem is in the burner itself. I have several computers with CD and DVD burners in them, and use a couple of different apps to burn. The speed usually stays pretty consistent on everything I use. Programs running in the background can really affect the burning speed. Incidently, the slower the burn, the better the quality. Good luck.

Could the difference in the 2 computers be CPU clock speed and amount of RAM? 128MB of RAM is the MINIMUM required to run Win XP. Go to crucial.com and find the correct RAM for your computer and upgrade to the maximum amount that your mobo will handle. What speed of CDs are you burning to?? The blank media controls the burn speed. that means if you put a 16X in the drive, it will only burn at a 16X rate, even though it's a 48X burner. Judging from your question, I'd say your burning to 6X or 8X blank CDs.

i have had your same problem in tha past, but i dont get CDS anymore. I download. Well, for starters, your lack of having a Pentium chip does a lot for it. Celerons suk at media stuff. Mainly for business. Also, your RAM is unbelievable. I didnt know they made ram that LOW!!!!!. Upgrade to at least a GB. 128 megs is probly ur problem. My cell phone runs faster than ur comp. lol

enable's destroy this down. human beings have the skill to play flash rigidity music or they don't. human beings have the skill to receive music or they don't. won't be able to play flash music, won't be able to receive - that is my grandmother. they are going to purchase CD's. won't be able to play flash music, can receive. no longer going to purchase flash music, for glaring causes. Can play flash music, can receive - Neither the client nor the writer is going to pay added funds for a flash rigidity to furnish what might want to be downloaded for free. (i do not recommend they don't pay for the music. I recommend that the web shipping itself would not value funds.) Can play flash music, won't be able to receive- that isn't any one. Who has the skill to play music from a flash rigidity yet don't have the skill to receive? in the journey that they bypass operating with their iPod, that would not count number. for sure they could't receive new music even as they're operating, yet they could't purchase flash drives even as they're operating, both. even as they get again homestead, they could fireplace up the computer and receive new music. possibly you imagine someone would not ever have a web connection, or don't have a computer and has an MP-3 participant really elementary that it may't be used to browse the internet. this kind of individual isn't a good shopper. And servicing that shopper might want to be very intense priced because you want paper catalogs and telephone operators and a shipping branch.
