Would you be opposed to bullets made of rubber and not lead? Instead of taking guns off the streets, how about just changing the ammunition?

I'm not talking about saving materials and resources, I'm talking about saving lives, yet at the same time, appeasing gun lobbyists.
Rubber bullets can only kill when fired in close proximity and aimed at vital organs and the head.

The real thing often doesn't have enough power to put down a perp. Rubber bullets would be far to dangerous when facing a perp with lead or jacketed bullets (almost all bullets are made with lead, most with a copper or brass jacket). No way would I carry mine with rubber bullets. If you want less-than-lethal self defense, there are plenty of options out there with more reliability than rubber bullets. But if someone is trying to kill me, I have no problem returning the favor-make mine a JHP.

The trouble with liberals is just that they know so much that isn't so. The Liberal ideology is a theory , fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and which holds forth beliefs that have no basis in reality. Making something against the law will not always stop it.. If guns were ever banned than only the bad guys would have them..Criminals prefer unarmed victims!! Having a gun will not help all the time but being defenseless will never help.. Calling 911 and asking the bad guy to wait is not a viable option. Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!! Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens. Arnie

Guns are also legitimately used by hunters. Rubber ammunition would not be as effective at killing game quickly and humanely.
Plus, it would make weapons less useful for self defense, which is a bigger disadvantage for people not able to defend themselves physically. Fear of serious bodily harm or injury at the hand of an armed victim is a great deterrant to many would be criminals. If they're only risk is getting a big bruise, they are less likely to be deterred.
Also, the ammo would just be imported (or smuggled) from other countries, or obtained illegally from the police or military.

Well, you are obviously a concerned environmentalist, because there are not many bullets that are still made of lead! I don't think rubber would have the stopping power that might be needed in an emergency. Maybe glass though, that would also be environmentally friendly.
Remember, guns on the street and used by criminals - gun enthusiasts, are not criminals. I frankly want to keep my bullets, whatever they are made out of.

You obviously do not understand why the founding fathers put the Second Amendment in the Constitution. There are two reasons, both in the interest of freedom, and both require metal.
The first reason is to defend the nation in case of invasion- If a nation is stupid enough to invade the US they will have to face our miitary in addition to 300 million armed citizens. Look at what's happening in Iraq, we defeated the national army in a month, and now we are fighting armed citizens.
The second reason is to protect freedom in America- If the government became tyrannous we would have a reasonable chance of fighting back. Because it is very difficult to opress people with guns. Here's what happened when people gave up their right to have guns and REAL bullets...
In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929-1953, approx.
20 million people were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938. From 1939-1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies and others were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948-1952, 20 million political
dissidents were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. from 1964-1981, 100,000 Mayan
Indians were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971-1979, 300,000 Christians
were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975-1977, one million “educated” people were rounded up and exterminated.
That places total victims who lost their lives because they couldn't defend themselves because of gun control at approximately 56 million in the last century.

Sure, and how about we take the V-8 out of the corvette. They surely don't need all that power to exceed the speed limit and potentially kill someone in the hands of an irresponsible outlaw driver..

Rubber bullets can kill too. Guns are made for killing, they should be left that way.
