More than anything, I think it is the fear of the unknown. I am loving life here on earth and am in no hurry to find out what comes next, but I do believe it will be very exciting whatever it is.

It is the fear of what will be. We don't know therefore we fear. Those who believe they know what happens next don't actually fear the act of death but the concern for others when they are gone and the time that they may not have tomorrow to make a change or difference. Death is a fact but we always think we have more time until we don't.

Some humans don't fear it and some do. I don't know why because everyone has their reason. For me.... I think it's because until I do everything that I wanted to do in this world before I die. And until I do them all, I won't fear death because the last thing I want to think of when I die is that "I've done everything I wanted." I fear that I'll die before I get to do all these things.

Because we don't really understand it. We are not really sure what awaits us on the other side, if anything. Maybe some would call it a lack of faith? An old song goes "everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die." I have heard it said that if we knew what heaven was really like, we could not wait to get there. Of course, on the other hand, they say there is an awful place awaiting the unrepentant, unsaved sinner. Another song, of a different stripe, says, "Troubles are many. They're as deep as a well! I could swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell! Now I'm not scared of dying and I don't really care. If it's peace you find in dying, well, then let the time be near." Of course, the only way to find out for sure what awaits us on the "otherside" is to die. It is uncharted territory, despite what all the holy books and holy men try to tell us. Unless you are a Spiritualist, we have not the testimony of one soul who has ever "crossed over" and come back to tell us what to expect. And even then, could we necessarily believe them? Spooks could be masquerading demons, out to deceive us. It is best to be careful.

People are afraid of the unknown. Nobody knows what comes after death (if anything) and people also don't know what death will be like and are afraid it will be painful.

Personally, I'm not really afraid of death, but the thought of seizing to exist one day is kind of strange and I wonder if I'll be able to do all the things I want to do before that time comes.

I think we fear it because we dont understand it. We understand the physical aspect of it, but does anyone truly know what happens after death? Is there an after life? or are we re-born or recycled? or do we go back to dust and our soul as well?

Everyone fears what they dont really understand.... kids who dont understand the dark are afraid of it until they learn that they are safe whenn the lights go off. Its the same with most fears.

I'm not so sure if it's death that many people fear, but rather how it may come about, and all of the hypothetical things that plague your mind while pondering it. I guess what I'm trying to say is along this analogy regarding a friend of mine who always complained about not having a girlfriend, then complaining when about "her" when he did...I told him, he simply in love with the idea of being in love.

They fear it most because it is unknown—they don’t know what awaits them on the other side of death. The contemplation of their not living on a conscious level is hard for them to accept. Missing those that they love is another aspect of their fear.

It is the one thing all of us that are alive today have in common—someday we will all die.
