like if it said ..

student-to-faculty ratio - 20:1

does that mean its 20 kids per teacher, or are janitors and principals and like cafiteria ladies included too?

20 students to 1 teacher. teachers are faculty. everyone else is staff

maintenance workers, coaches, etc.. are not considered part of the faculty. faculty indicates a member of the teaching staff. you are correct about the ratio above. 20 students per teacher. what i would be more concerned about is how many sign up for the course that i am interested in. there the ratio could go way up. the ratio may be even higher for the required courses. check it out.

They don't include janitors and other service employees. They would likely include, however, Associate Instructors (grad students who teach classes or discussion sections). Colleges report faculty-to-student ratios to demonstrate the amount of individual focus that a student may be able to receive in their classes. A janitor or cafeteria worker isn't going to be much help to a student when they can't figure out their finite homework.

Faculty include personell who actually teach within the school. The janitor and lunch lady are referred to as school staff. So 20 : 1 means twenty students to one teacher.

Student to faculty includes teachers and administrative personnel. It doesn't include janitors who usually work for outside companies.
