Wooden floors. They are much easier to clean and to keep up with. You can always throw a nice area rug on a wood floor too.

Hardwood floors, with area rugs. When I bought this house it had nasty wall to wall carpeting. The family had small children, and a dog that evidently wasn't well housebroken. When I peeled up a corner, there was a dark hardwood floor that it looked like it, in the 50 years since the house was built, had never been finished.
As soon as I could, I had the carpet pulled up and the floors done downstairs. They came out this nice dark honey, with darker grain color. The area rugs keep my feet warm and also warm up the room. Also, area rugs come in patterns, which add more visual interest to the room, if you are comfortable mixing patterns in decorating.

Carpet has many benefits - it hides dirt, it is warmer on the feet, it can make the house feel better insulated/warm. I also love it when it is fluffy and cushy on the feet. The only draw back is when it gets stained and you can't get the stain out.
Wooden floors are beautiful - especially old one that have all those rich colors in them. But they are creaky sometimes and cool on the feet. I'm up in the north where it's cold - so I do prefer carpeted floors for practical reasons. Love wood for aesthetic reasons.

I prefer wood floors. I have them throughout my house. I have a brand-new, energy efficient and draft-free home, so cold floors is not a problem. We have some area rugs to keep the noise down. Others are right--wood floors are quick and easy to clean. I can clean the entire wood floor quicker than I can vacuum a handful of rugs.

I prefer the warmth and comfort of a carpet but at the same time am aware that carpets are not usually as hygienic so don't myself have them in the bathroom or kitchen.
I once had a washable bathroom carpet though, that fitted in my washing machine, wish I'd taken it when I moved house because I can't find such a carpet again but intend to keep looking....

That relies upon on which component to me you're asking. once you're asking the decorator in me, i could say wood. lots extra state-of-the-artwork finding. once you're asking the mummy in me, I say carpet! With wood once you lay out staggering great ornamental carpets, toys get shoved below or it is going to become a tent. in the adventure that your newborn falls the place the carpet isn't, it hurts extra, and crawling on wood is a beast. Plus wood flooring are lots noisier!
