I have a young friend who has this problem and tried a DNC/ Oral Contraceptives-Nothing is working for her. Her cycle comes every couple months and lasts up to 20 days. We've both looked into IUD's and Abulation procedures. She is too young for a hysterectomy and wants to have children someday. This is hereditary for her. Please tell us the pros and cons associated with any options that might help?

i am surprised that the ocp did not work, they are usually very effective. has she been evaluated for polycystic ovary syndrome given the infrequency of these long bleeding episodes? i would strongly consider the mirena iud. non-permanent but long term birth control with the very beneficial side effect of decreasing menstrual flow significantly. first few months may be some spotting but is only temporary. when she wants to conceive just take it out-very easy to do. cant have ablation if you want kids in the future. the mirena iud has been used in women with many types of bleeding problems-fibroids, adenomyosis, hormonal-it almost always works like a charm.

Your "friend" might have the same problem that my ex had. Sounds similar but I probably would want to check somewhere else other than HERE for medical advise. Anyway, she did get a copper IUD and we were very happy with it at the time. Now though, from what I have heard, the IUD does not stop the egg from being fertilized. It only stops it from attaching itself to the... well... wherever it attaches (I'm not a Dr. nor do I play one on TV). If you believe that at the time of conception is the beginning of life, don't get a IUD since the fertilized egg is passed.

Endometriosis or stress can cause excessive bleeding during your periods. I've had periods too that lasted 2 weeks duration and I have endometriosis. Does she have a lot of pain with her menses or during her ovulation? She needs to be evaluated by her physician. Oral contraceptives are normally very good at getting your periods on a normal cycle. Was she forgetting to take her meds as directed? They also have an injection they can give monthly. The cons are that with almost all birth control, she will gain a lot of weight.

Mirena might help her but she need to be evaluated it endometriosis! The pro is the lack of a period (which basically dosent match up with the egg passing like a previous poster said) The draw back is she wills pot for a few months and she may become infertile.08% chance but she needs to know this. Its highly recommended for a woman who has had at least 1 child and from the sound of it she dosent! Bc she is more likely toe xpell it due to her uterus being smaller than that of a woman who has had at least 1 child

Your friend needs to go see a gynecologist and probably have what is called a hysteroscopy where they look into the uterus and decide a course of treatment. She also may need some blood work to determine if she is becoming anemic during her menses and to determine if her problem is hormonal.
The sooner the better.

So my mom said as the physician and we went in. She did not do some thing yet in simple terms talked to me. She instructed me in simple terms to dangle in there and it ultimately went away. believe me, you'd be high quality, I made it lol. :)
