They probably had the holiday and they officially list it as "optional" in their contact. When the school year schedule is being made they say they don;t want it. Then to inconvenience parents in an attempt to make them force a settlement between the school board and teachers take those optional days. If it doesn't force the settlement fast enough the teachers will stop doing after school help and extra-curricular activities.
They punish the students to force the parents to pressure the school board to accept the union's egregious demands. The same people who are crying about how they are underpaid and how mush they love teaching and how their job is in their blood, have no problem making he kids suffer to get raises higher than anyone in private industry.

Basically a teacher union question. So many holiday's have been added over the years, that if schools observed them all, the session would go through July. Most school districts limit the number of holidays to a strict number. There is no law that says you must close on a federal holiday. It is up to the cities and states. I remember when I was a child, we got Admission Day off in California. That's the day California was admitted to the union. But alas, no more. It had to be replaced with others--e.g. Martin L. King Day. Notice how some schools take off for both Lincoln and Washington's birthdays for 2 holidays in February? But the feds only have one now, President's Day, which is quite new. Bottom line is, schools must pick and choose which holiday's to close or they would be closing quite often. But hey, most trash pickups on Mondays still pick up on Colombus Day! Federal holiday yes, major holiday no. And many states have holidays where schools close that you and I would know nothing about. Teacher's unions contract for a certain amount of holidays and the schools must abide by that.

The only organizations legally obliged to recognize Federal Holidays are agencies of the Federal government. Public schools are run by the state.

BOYCOTT? in a school system. woo.
maybe you take Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday instead?
Oh I see you want both.
Lets reduce 180 day part time school year as it is to say 90 days.
That better> Maybe just on Tue and Wed this week and Tue-Wed-Thur next week. Alternate that way. That ok with you?
would not want our young people getting over stuffed with useless knowledge would we?

I don't have a clue unless the system believes he was not the first discoverer of America. It's a Federal Holiday and your schools are funded partially by Federal money.

As previously noted, there's no real enforcement of 'federal' holidays outside of the Federal Government itself. A short but more detailed answer is at: http://www.lectlaw.com/files/emp11.htm

This is America. And anyone who wants to has the right to boycott anything they see fit. As for Columbus Day, I wouldn't get my knickers in a knot over it, because it's a bogus holiday. Christopher Columbus DID NOT discover America.

They have every right to do it. Don't get too stressed, we all have to go to school the same amount of days as everyone else.
You'll probably get an extra day for Christmas or Spring break.
