That depends where you live. In the US, it is legal only in one state (Mass) and it is not recognized at all for the purposes of federal law.

In Spain, Canada, the Netherlands and some Scandinavian countries, it is completely legal, although there are some restrictions on adoption.

In Britain, marriage is illegal but domestic partner registrations are legal, and these act similarly to a marriage; though again there are some restrictions.

In many countries, neither marriage nor domestic partnerships are permitted for gay or lesbian couples.

It depends on what country you live. In Europe, there are several countries who make almost no difference between gay marriage and other marriages: Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and several other countries.

Some countries though say that even if you are married you still can't adopt children when you are gay. But the other things are equal to "normal" marriage

In Europe, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain allow full same sex marriages.

Several other countries (including Denmark and the UK) allow what are called "registered partnerships". These give same sex couples access to some of the privileges of marriage but not to all.
Below is a link to a Wikipedia article about same sex marriage.
