Well, if nothing else -
Twigs provide nesting places & cover for smaller life forms, and being organic, will break down & provide nutrients eventually.
Rocks provide lots of hinding places - complete ecosystems for some life forms.

The twigs will, in time, become compost and become part of the earth again, to fill the soil with nutrients and the rocks provide cover for smaller animals when they nned protection, like snakes and mice.

twigs can be used for housing and at some point become compost and give back in that way.
rocks can provide shelter for creatures but also slows down erosion from rain, wind, etc.

Cute riddle, however I'm dissatisfied you gave the reply! I was once so excited on the grounds that I had guessed a "melted snowman" and was once keen to provide that reply!! Was handy to grasp the reply considering I lived in Connecticut for decades and was once used to on account that sight in persons's entrance yards come Spring!
