When I upgraded from 98 to XP, I had a lot of problems and eventually found that the easiest way was to do a clean install(basically just installing from scratch instead of upgrading). If I'm not mistaken(which I may very well be), when you put the XP cd in, you have an option to just install(don't click upgrade). If you have that option, try it. If not, go to the Microsoft.com website and search clean install for Windows XP. That's where I got my instructions from. Hope this helps.

Just put your windows XP disk in the CD drive and reboot your computer. The computer will ask if you want to boot from cd disk click or enter the correct answer. It will then load files and finally it will come up and may say that it found another operating system. You will just continue with a fresh installation which will reformat your hard drive and install the new XP operating system. Just follow the prompts

nicely, maximum of those solutions look useful sufficient. i could agree that without spending slightly money on upgrading the confusing stress and RAM, you shall be extra suitable sticking with residing house windows ninety 8. whether it quite is a hand-me-down, i could recommend reformatting and reinstalling residing house windows ninety 8 on it. you would be suprised how lots quicker the laptop'll will run! jointly as working the Win ninety 8 setup CD, it would ask you in case you prefer to format the HD. basically tell it which you do. additionally, it can be a competent concept to get it on the information superhighway for some uncomplicated widows enhancements, in basic terms for kicks and giggles! feels like a beneficial back-up laptop. it would run some older video games (oldies-yet-candies, understand what I recommend?) and a few solid observe processing! have relaxing!

When you install the newer version of windows, it automatically removes the older version or it compiles the new OS over the older one.

You don't need to, just put the XP CD into your CD-Rom drive (while your computer is turned on).
