Well that's a pretty easy one to answer. It usually floats on its side, or upside down either at the bottom of the tank or at the surface. It doesn't move, and it doesn't "breathe".
And yes, I have seen many dead fish over the years.

Filmy eyed - occasionally- floating at the top of the tank; or, in some cases, sunk at the very bottom of the tank. Just prod him with the net to see if he's really alive or actually dead - I used to have one fish that was just lazy and would lie at the bottom of the tank for hours.

The poor thing looks like it is helpless. You try to knock on the aquarium a couple times and nothing. Then you look for you net and start to push it around..still nothing. The thing is lifeless. Then you know that the fish is dead.
(...now you are thinking that you shouldn't of spent so much money for that thing....)

well since ive had three betas die in the last few months, they turn upside down, but do not necessarily float up to the top of the tank. they also turn colors. they turn pale so that you know the second you look at them that they are dead.

like a fish that is dead.
Sheesh.
The fish doesn't swim.
Usually they float on top of the water.
Their eyes glaze over after a while.
