I always think of the mind as my brain

2006-10-07 11:45:46 · answer #1 · answered by Mark 2 · 0 0

I think the mind is a physical entity. Its physical electrons zooming around a very complex physical structure. The problem with studying the mind is using a mind to study a mind which is sort of unavoidable when you study stuff. probably best to create some altenative form of intelligence and let that study the human mind. That probably wouldnt work either but would be fun and might mean robots taking over the universe or somthing.

It is what`comes out` of the mind that can be studied. The things we say ,the interpretation of sounds movement, the reaction to different ideas and circumstance. Why one `mind` interprets data differently from another.A persons`mind is the translator and interpreter of information to enable the being to exist in life.It is only by the collecting and analysing of these interpretations in different people and different situations, that we can even begin to study its` workings.Although not indeed a physical entity, it could be called a side effect of the working brain.

Sigmend Freud asked this question and this is called the Mind-Physicality Paradox.

He essentially said that the mind behaves as a physcial entity and therefore can be studied.

The research of dreams has had a crucial roll to play in the study of the mind - especially the unconscious mind. In fact The Dream Oracle enables one to ask questions and receive answers direct from the ever wise unconscious mind, and proves to be a reliable source of clever advice.

Because the mind demonstrable exists - you have perceived of your question using your mind, framed it, written it etc. Your question is a product of your mind, proving its existence. That being the case the mind we know exists can and has been studied, and it has found to have structures and form, patterns of behaviour that can be influenced by outside forces. All these things can be analysed and measured and go toward the study of the mind.

A lot of psychologists don't really study the mind, they study behaviors and make educated guesses about the mind based on those behaviors.

We can't which is why so much of psychiatry/psychology is speculation. Our best example of how a nerve works is in a sea slug. 1 nerve, but it is visible. We can prod it here, watch the nerve, and see the result there. To date no one has volunteered to allow psych. to do the same. There are several posters in Yahoo Answers I'd be willing to volunteer however.

you are correct, they cannot physically study it, although they use all sorts of super gadgets to study the electrical activity in the brain which is what our mind really is after all it's all just volts and current.
