Go ahead - connect your Webtv Plus and have fun. Microsoft no longer manufactures the original MSNTV / Webtv but there are still over a million devoted users.

Microsoft has replaced the original boxes with MSNTV2 - designed primarily for broadband. I have MSNTV2 on cable broadband. It’s far, far faster than the original boxes, but does not include the “altdiscuss” community, which made Webtv so enjoyable.

I think you have misunderstood the recent decision from Microsoft to no longer support the original Windows 98 / 95 computer operating system software with “critical updates”. Computers with the Windows 98 / 95 operating software are still quite functional – I suspect hackers have quit targeting the older version of Windows.

Webtv can’t get a virus – so there is little maintenance for Microsoft.

If you enjoy Webtv, I recommend getting a spare box on Ebay.
