Lol is it scaring you?

Okay your computer has scheduled itself to come on.

Got to control panel and go into scheduled tasks [that's under 'performance and maintnenace' if you use category view.

Look at the tasks inside it; right click each task one by one and select 'Properties' then click the settings tab

Look for a task that has "Wake the computer to perform this task" checked, simply uncheck it and press ok

Allowing the task to wake the computer allows the bios to boot he pc to run the task

The odds are 99% that you have a BIOS problem and not a demon problem. Try a system restore first if you have it that is. To use system restore, click the start menu/programs/accessories/systemtools/system restore. Then choose a date prior to when this problem began.

If that doesn't work, or you dont want to use system restore... go into your BIOS. You get to your BIOS during the time your PC is booting up. Most likely you will need to keep your finger down on the delete key as the PC boots up. Just make sure you have the delete key down before the black DOS screen says "Loading Windows"

You'll have to search for the BIOS menu, but be careful in there. Once you're in the BIOS menu, the timed start-up and shut-down options are usally either in the first window/page or under a power tab. ( Depending on your Windows version) look for something that resembles (( resume by alarm-on )) and using the pageup pagedown keys manually turn it to OFF. Be sure to SAVE SETTINGS before exiting. Another route to re-setting the BIOS is going to the exit screen and tell it to (load defaults or optimized defaults), if it is a BIOS setting, this should take care of it.

Sounds like a Powersupply problem. the shutting down and starting up is actuallly achieved in the actual powersupply inside the computer, Your OS actually tells the powersupply to shut down. The switch to turn it on is basicly just a jumper that starts the startup process inside the powersupply. If somthing goes wrong inside the powersupply it could be misinterpreting it as a powerup command.

it'll only cost you about $30 at RadioShack to replace it yourself if your a mechanicly minded person. A little more if you have to pay someone to do it for you.

There are a few things that could do this...

If you are putting the PC on "Standby" instead of turning off.

A Virus... run a Boot Time Virus Scanner-- that scans disks in the same way and in the same time as Windows CHKDSK does.

Worms or Trojans that are getting into your MOBO Bios settings, there are settings to automattically wake up your PC with a LAN or internet connection.

Bad Power Supply or MOBO (Motherboard) flash bios.

If the computer was turned off, then you need to contact your dealer/manufacturer. If the computer was in 'standby' or 'hibernate' mode then you need to check the BIOS settings which will include an option like 'Wake on network'. These are special options which allow a computer to be re-awaken from a sleeping state.

Or it might be your cat? Is the power button accessible to wandering paws?

This could be one of many things but whatever it is its related to your ACPI power system.

ACPI is a flexible power system which allows you to:
Wake-On-Ring - Wake your system with a phone call
Wake-On-Lan - Wake it up across a network
Alarm wake - Allows you to set a day/time for it to wake
Button on - Allows you to use buttons on keyboard/mouse
Etc.

It could be a virus which has managed to affect your ACPI power settings (ACPI is designed to be accessible from windows - not -just the bios) or it could be a setting which has been set directly in the bios - either by yourself or someone else.

Maybe you have a setting that allows your keyboard to turn it on or even the mouse and you never realised it.

There are many possibilities but don't worry - it's not haunted ;)

If you like my answer, please vote for it.

Was it a full moon day?

May be u are putting it on Standby mode. So when the mouse moves a little bit, your computer starts up.

May be a virus. Scan it.

If your computer is 98 or older then its time to get a new computer.

Computers are like pets, it probably just needs some attention. Leave a few scrap discs out every night, this may help to keep it occupied.
