anybody have any suggestions on how to plant a cactus/aloe garden in a small space?

Fill your container or area with well draining soil. You can go to any store and get bags of it. Reasearch your cacti/aloe and learn how far to space them. You might not use that many, depending on the size of the area you are planting. IM if you need more help.

The soil needs to be very quick draining, maybe even a couple of inches of gravel for drainage. I would choose slow growing species like saguaro. Or, try to have Agaves and Aloes with offsets. When the plant gets too large, you can take it out and put the pups back. There are a few cactus that grow thinly, like mistletoe cactus, or if you want to have unusual plants try Euphorbia, like a pencil cactus that will grow taller. Another idea is to plant seeds for cactus along with small specimens, then you will have smaller plants to replace any others that outgrow the plot. Have fun with it, go on some sites on the web that feature desert landscapes. You could really recreate a large dish garden planting.
