A transgender person is someone whose gender identity or expression differs from conventional expectations for their physical sex. The term transgender is used to describe several distinct but related groups of people who use a variety of other terms to self-identify. Transgender people can include transsexuals (not all transsexual people need or want sex reassignment surgery), masculine women, feminine men, drag queens/kings, cross-dressers, gender queers, two-spirit, butches, transmen, transwomen, etc. Like other people, transgender people can be straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual.

GREAT answer Markin...I am transgendered myself. I am a female to male. All transsexuals are transgendered, but not all transgendered people are transsexual. Does that make sense or have I thoroughly confused you now?
Transgendered is an umbrella term used to define a group of people who's outward gender expression doesn't truly define the gender which they feel they are inside. Transgender people do not conform to traditional gender roles set forth by society. They are a kind of "gender nonconformist". Like mentioned already, this can include butch women, effiminate men, transsexuals, crossdressers, transvestites, two-spirits, intersexed people, butch lesbians, effiminate gay men, even metrosexual men. Where it REALLY starts getting broken down, is when you add sexual orientation into the mix.
NOT ALL TRANSGENDERED/TRANSSEXUAL PEOPLE ARE GAY!!!!!! God I don't know HOW many times I've had to drill that in the heads of people who have been persuaded by assumption and stereotypes. Sexual orientation has NOTHING to do with gender identity. Gender identity is the gender (male or female or maybe somewhere inbetween) that you feel you are, it defines the "gender" in which you act like most. Sexual orientation on the other hand, is the biological sex of the person you are most sexually attracted to. So, I'll use myself for example of my point....I am a female to male transsexual. To most people they see that to mean "very masculine female" or "butch lesbian". When they assume "butch lesbian" they've just automatically equated my transition and my gender identity to also mean my sexual orientation. Do you see what I'm saying? There's plenty of transgendered/transsexual people who are actually STRAIGHT. Where it gets confusing is, THIS example:
a heterosexual man decides to undergo transition and become a woman. This new woman likes women (always has, because as a guy, he liked women, he was straight remember?) and as a new WOMAN, she STILL likes women. So, in SOCIETY'S eyes, she would be a lesbian, but in reality, her sexual orientation has never changed, just her GENDER IDENTITY. Do you see what I'm saying? Also, to reverse it, you could say , a woman liked men, this woman decided to become a man, but this new "man" still likes men. To society, this female to male transsexual would appear as a gay man, and in technical terms WOULD be a gay man, because he now identifies as a male who is attracted to other males.
It's true though, sometimes gay men decide to become women. So, they would have been a gay man before, but AFTER transition (provided she still likes guys) would be a straight woman. Sexuality is so fluid, people really shouldn't put labels on it.
In my case, I find it amusing, because before my transition, I got the "butch lesbian" label, which in a sense I suppose was fitting because I DO like girls....a lot..but anyway, NOW that I "pass" as a man, I get hit on by gay men, because they assume I'm a gay man. And the moral of the story is.....
ASSUME NOTHING

Go to wikipedia for this if you don't know what transgender means. In essence, it refers to people who identify with the opposite sex, and they live their life as such. However, they may or may not choose to undergo gender reassignment surgery, which would make them transsexual.
