I am in track and last year before the season we all conditioned together, but if your school doesn't have that than you should run about 2 times a week for a month or two and each day do a little more than you did the day before. Also do some push ups ab work etc.

Decide at what level you want to run
Short, middle or long.
Short (up to 400 meters) are basically sprints so you need to work on explosive energy and breathing.
Middle distances (400 to 1600 meters) require the speed of a spinter but the endurance of a long distance runner.
Long (5000 and 10000M) require endureacne and a finishing kick.
Once you decide on where you want to go, the proper kind of training can commence.
In the meantime, you can still work on this by doing laps at the school to build up to something.
My suggestion is you start off running the straights and walking the curves for eight laps. Don't push, but go at a good pace.
Do this five days a week for however long it take to run the 8 laps.
Then build up to where you will eventually be running four full laps.

dont train by yourself. -it's wayy too boring and less safe. run with other people joining track.
have one day you run extra long and slower...and one day you run a short distance but faster maybe even a sprint workout.
make sure you stretch good before and after your run.
start running 3 days a week and work your way up to 5 days.
ask the track coach.

Oh, I am too. What I was told was to start running more and more every week. Also, run long distances, even if you only run short on the track team.

start out running for 5 minutes each day.... when that gets to easy keep adding more time to keep it a challenge
also try different techniques.... sprinting, interval training, gassers, hill run, long/short distance
talk to someone on the track team and get their advice...consider what event you want to do
