Some elements in the book are hard to remake on screen. Also in books there are a lot inner dialogue that needs to come into play. You can't really have a movie where it is nothing but someone's inner dialogue going on. So they have to change events in the book for the movie so that things make sense without the inner dialogue. Also books go into great detail that if they were to include everything the movies would be so long and people would lose interest. So they pick and choose the best parts and the most important parts of books and sometimes have to change things to make the movie flow better.

Sometimes the changes are good and some of them are just horrible.

Most books have so many plots and subplots that if they stayed true to the book , the movie would equal to Wagner's The Ring and you'd be there three or four nights.

Generally they take the major plot and tinker with it , then change the ending because the ' focus' groups didn't like it.

As I always tell my high school students: Never judge a book by its movie.

I suppose the reasons that directors alter the contents of a book when making the film based upon it is to insert some of their own personal perceived creativity.

they are artsy and probably did not think that a certain part in the book would work out visually. ALSO they have to shorten the movie. a movie based on everything in a book could be more than 3 hours long

usually the book is way too long and has too much detail so it has to be cut down. and the film makers are going to want to make the movie more interesting to a larger crowd so they can make more money

Probably to make them more filmable. Remember that you still have to convey information to the audience so they can understand what's going on. You can often do this with dialogue but it's harder to get in a character's head on screen.
