All you need is decoder software which you should already have installed if you have a dvd rom. Lots of dvds have the necessary software on the disc. Just insert disc and go. The Lord of the Rings dvds do. I use Power DVD Gold it does some neat tricks like press two keys and make your fave scene a wallpaper on your desktop.

You don't need any special software to watch DVDs on your laptop. Windows Media Player is just fine.
If DVDs arn't playing on your computer, then you probably don't have a DVD drive. A disk drive and a DVD drive are two different things. DVD drives are usually extras.

My apologies to others on this, but DO NOT use Windows Media Player as your DVD player -- I accidentally uninstalled my DVD player off of my PC and had to rely on Windows Media Player, totally undependable.

basically, what you need is a DVD player and the software - CODEC's this is a good codec pack~FREE http://sourceforge.net/projects/gordianknot
And, yes ~~ you do need software to play a DVD movie on any computer
