Is there a way that I can be notified that I have an incoming telephone call / new mail when I'm online?

if this is the case, i would assume you're using dial up access. well, you can install a callwave software on your computer (check it out on this website: http://callwave.com) and for your email do you have yahoo? you can sign in to messenger and get notified when a new email comes in or you can opt to install the new yahoo toolbar (http://downloads.yahoo.com)

There was or is something called Pagoo which does that sort of thing for you. Yahoo IM, when left open, can also tell you when you have a new email.
