1 laptop with Realtek RTL8139/810X
1 PC with 2 LAN-cards, I don't know exatcly the names, but I don't think they make any difference. I have 2 LAN cables , and a modem. I have an internet connection with the PC. I just want to set up a LAN to play with my brother. I don't need internet on both computers. Actually I don't need internet at all. I just need to connect the two machines. It says that the cable is unplugged. I tried everything. Even manually entering the IP address : 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 to the other one. I've been trying for hours, so please help me guys.

If you are connecting NIC to NIC, you need to use a crossover cable. Make sure you get a crossover "patch" cable and not a T-1 crossover cable. If you don't want to use a crossover cable, you will need to connect both NICs to a hub or switch with standard cables.

The IPs will need to be static unless you are going to set your machine up as a DHCP server (unneccessary for your setup).
For your machine, assign the NIC's IP to 192.168.1.50, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and no specified gateway or DNS.
For the other machine, assign the NIC's IP to 192.168.1.51, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and no specified gateway or DNS.

FYI: Once you set up the connection it's pretty easy to share the internet connection to the other PC. Enable the internet sharing feature of the adapter you have a connection on. Your NIC will need to be 192.168.0.1, a subnet mask on both computers of 255.255.0.0, and enter the DNS servers. The gateway address of the other machine will need to be 192.168.0.1 as well.

Enjoy!

open internet explorer window, type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, if yuo are promted to type in the user name password, by default it is set to "admin" user name and no password, some routers like my dlink have a default of blank user name and admin password, try them both to get in. once you find out your user name and password, this will bring you to your router setup page. Go to LAN, make sure all the settings are set so that another pc can connect without any use of passwords. once applied, this should automatically restart your router, wait a couple of seconds and on XP, a popup alert will come up on the bottom right of the screen saying yuo've lost your 100mbs connection, this will shortly be replaced by a "now connected" alert. once yuo've checked that, make sure that both PCs are connected to the router, and open the gaem you want to play, go to the LAN multiplayer screen, and once you and your friend are both their, it should show up as another player. if you are using a router(what i mentioned earlier) dont stress out about the router setup, this is just a suggestion to ensure no settings have been changed so that your friend cannot connect to the router through his IP. you may have to start a game before it shows up on his system. The way to do it without internet connection as well, would be to hook both of them up to a netowrk hub. this is basically the same thing as arouter and is popular if you're connecting multiple consoles (like xbox or ps2) to do a local private mulitplayer. either way will work fine for your situation. if you have any further trouble, my yahoo messenger is cat_hater29 and email is: rzr1000@hotmail.com

You need to buy a "crossover cable" - Radio Shack and other such stores have them. Use that cable to connect the laptop and PC after you set those same IP addresses on them.
