If you dont play a musical instrument, its not music according to the Encyclopedia. I happen to agree, a voice in not an instument. Also Rap is socially damaging to African Americans right?

In my opinion and the opinion of many others, music is anything which makes sound. The American composer John Cage once went to a chamber in america which was engineered to be the most silent room in the world. He went in, stood still and held his breath. After a time he went out and told the engineer or whatever that while he was in there he could hear two sounds, one high and one low. The engineer told him that the high one was his blood pressure and the low one was his heartbeat. So really sound and in the long run music is with you in some way shape or form as long as you are alive. So don't disrespect rap music because it isn't instrumental or easy on the ear. The american composer Charles Ives once said "Beautiful Music is often confused with musdic that lets the ears sit back in an easy chair". So try to be openminded and see the infinite possibilities of sound as music.

Well speaking trully and democraticly... sadly it is also music, and all other modern music like the contemporer that claim a broken glass sound as music.

Well, in the 20'th century they made a definition of music that every sound that human made purposely and with concept is indeed music.

Even thou i'm not a fan of rap, but I could still give some respect to those artist, because they know what they're doing (rap was a music of protest and critics).

but if we're talking about nowdays popish that play many kind of music but only doing it for fame and money, only follows that glory of other musician while don't understand exactly what they're doing (playing), that i cannot respect, i'm not even call them as artist, they're only some celebrities.
If you kill a lot of people with sadistic way but somehow symphatize people, then you're a celebrity;
If you're some important person in the goverment and use your power for your own benefit and become famous because people know that you're a dirty poiltician but cannot arrest you, then you're also a celebrities.

If you want to become a real artist, know your music, what your doing, not only because someother guy also do it.

But' it's always your own chose to choose your own music.
That's the democratic thing about music (art).

A voice is indeed an instrument. Anything that produces a sound can be an instrument.

The beauty of it all is that there's something for everybody. If you don't care for rap music, don't listen to it. Just like if you don't like what your seeing on TV, you have the option and free will to change the channel.

a voice is an instrument. just ask any professional singer. they have to work just as hard if not harder to keep their "instrument" aka vocal cords in shape. before they perform they cannot eat certain things, they have to exercise a good amount and other fun stuff. Not to mention, singing isn't as easy as the singers make it seem. There is a large amount of technique that goes into controlling the amount of air going in and out of the lungs, not to mention hitting the right notes and such.

singing isn't a instrument but it is still music because you are singing the notes on the instrument. you are also maintaining a beat and rythem.

if rapping makes you happy then it's ok. you are still maintaining a beat and rythem. maybe it would be a bit better if it not as much swearing. it would them make it ok for a lot more people.

Personally, I believe a voice can be the most beautiful instrument... Just go listen to Shinedown... That man's voice is incredible...

But I will agree with you that rap isn't music.... It's a disgrace to everything that is real music....

If that were the case, then you'd have to ban ALL percussion instruments from all musical groups, including orchestras! I don't think even the most tight-a**ed, classical composer would like THAT!

It's more like artful speaking. Think about it, all rappers do is talk quickly to a beat. Half the time they don't write either the song or the beat.
