after all, only the dead are in the back, and they cant see out or can they

So that the family and freinds can see what thier money is paying for. Plus it allows other drivers to be a bit courtious, if they know the hearse is carrying a coffin they will allow it to drive slower and wont give the driver grief. Seriously this is an issue

Its so that the drivers can see where there going when they are reversing, then again lorry drivers dont ( but they have a camera thats linked up to the cab on a monitor). So that when people make the sign of the cross (if your catholic) they can know if anyone is actually inside. Also so that its more open than being dark and gloomy and a sign that death is not the end and nothing to be sad about, but hell what do i know im only 14

So that spectators can pay their respects and so that you can differentiate it from a bog standard van. The old horse drawn hearses had windows too for the same reason and it just continued from that.

It's a ploy by the funeral home to get you to buy a better casket because if you get a cheap one EVERYONE in town will see the cheap casket in the back of the hearse.

So you can see if there is a coffin without having to open the door and disturb the poor dead person.

well i think at this stage the dead are actually in the coffin with a lid on too so unless they wake up and have a quick peek at the world outside,i think its for floral tribute gazing and so the drivers can see whats going on behind them too,lol ;0)
