the Adverts made up some lyrics about how Gary's eyes get transplanted to some unfortunate chap and then this poor guy wakes up seeing the world through the eyes of a killer

An executed killer in America for killing during a robbery. He was killed by a firing squad. A punk band (The Advent) released the song Through Gary Gilmores Eyes because he donated them and within hours of his death two people had his eyes transplanted.

He was a killer in the US who had been into petty crime from a young age. He was in and out of prison for most of his adult life, before he was sentenced to death for first degree murder. He was asked to choose whether he wanted to be hanged or shot, he chose to be shot. He declined all the appeals he was entitled to, and even asked his girlfriend Nicole to kill herself for him. When in the chair, he was asked if he had anything to say - he said, "let's do it." The song is Looking Through Gary Gilmore's Eyes by the Adverts. A movie called The Executioner's Song was made too, Tommy Lee Jones played Gilmore and Rosanna Arquette played his girlfriend Nicole.
