well here is the answear from a diver.....when u pass out the throat closes up to prevent the water from gettng in the lungs, its a natural reflex action, actually there are seveal ways of drowning, when the body is out...they dont feel anything, cept maybe a peaceful feeling..and one type of drowning is very peaceful....you basically go to sleep....unless the person wakes up in mid drowing and relizes it...then they can suffer a horrible death, i can go into details but they are quite grafic and you might not wanted it posted here....and when a diver gets nitrogen nacrosis, they can take the erg out of thier mouth and drown as well, but back to your question....no i dont feel a person knows anything when they pass out and drown, there is no awareness to let them know they are drowning

No.
But the medical examiner will know the difference. When you are conscious and go in the water you take water into your lungs and that water produces a thick white foam that will be in your mouth when you get to the ME's office and shows you were alive and awake when you went in. If you were unconscious it is considerably less.
I have known people that have drowned and were brought back to life by CPR and they panicked but then went to sleep once the gag reflex subsided. Drowning is no way to die however. If someone does save you and the time has been too great you may just be a vegetable and urinate and crap all over yourself for the rest of your life and be dependent on someone else until you do die.

Yes and no... Their inner self, would be aware, but their conscious self would feel nothing... Some people strongly believe we do know things, and that we are able to watch from above if we are dying... I'd like to think that. What do you think?

If the person is unconscious, then no. Being unconscious is just like being under anesthesia.
