I image they are very messy...... considering all that afterbirth and goo is floating around you in the water and your just sitting in it..

I had a water birth for my first, and a standard bed delivery for my 2nd, so I can compare the two for you. Mess wise I'd say the water birth was better, my waters broke while I was in the pool so yes I was sitting in it (Not that I gave a damn!) but you need a shower after giving birth either way and at least it wasn't all over the bed and the floor like the 2nd time! Plus the baby doesn't come out covered in blood (assuming you tear) as it gets a rinse on the way up! Aside from that, I'd recommend a water birth for anyone, the relief as I stepped into the bath was amazing, my hubbie said he could see the pain draining out of my face. The added advantage is that by law a midwife must be with you at ALL times when you are in a pool, whereas with my second the mw didn't believe me that it was happening fast and went off for her tea break at the crucial time!! Good luck, whatever you decide, you'll be fine and as soon as it's over you'll forget all about it!

The mess is the same but the pool takes care of all of it. My wife and I did waterbirth and it was amazing.
Besides being the best for you (helps with pain, makes it easier to sit or lie in any postion to push, and water is natural lubrication for the baby to slide out easier), it's great for the baby too. The baby comes out easier so there is less stress on him/her. Also, the baby is leaving a 98 degree belly and coming into a similar temperature. While the cord is attached, the baby doesn't need to breath so you can take your time bringing the baby to the surface and keepiing it warm. Instead of screaming and crying like you see in the movies, the baby will be so much calmer and aware. It will cry but softer and will stop easier.
It was a great experience, good for you for trying it!

Yes they are messy, think of soup with lumps............but despite the mess you feel cleaner than delivering on land because the water washes you all the time..........you will need to shower after giving birth and the midwives clean the pool (bless them)...................Go for it and good luck.

Hmm. I guess this depends what you mean by messy. Do you mean does blood get everywhere? Well, I guess so.
But BIRTH is messy. And LIFE is messy.

I presume all births are messy!

But is it normal for me to feel physically sick when reading this question...? Hmmm...
