Some of the words already suggested would only be correct if the activity was actually doing something about the horrible other life, or about how to cope with it. If not, you would have to call it "escapism".

I like the word,"catalyst". While it's not a synonym for "haven", it's kind of a catch-all phrase, where one poem written in a depressed state, sets the standard for all of them. If you want a simpler term, use the word, "outlet", or how about "oasis", "mecca" "diversion", "safe harbor" or "escape"?

cathartic, sublimation, lifejacket. Writing gives you emotional release, brief happiness, surcease from your problems,satisfaction, a sense of well-being but I can't think of only one word that applies.
