Good question. Depends on the type of both...if you take ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) then you have less SOx (sulfur dioxide, etc.) emissions. Diesel also gets better mileage than petrol too, so it can be better for the environment.

But if your diesel is not low sulfur, then its emissions are higher than petrol - so what you gain in mileage, you lose in emissions. I wish more people asked these kinds of questions :-)

Diesel is greener; unleaded petrol is made using benzenes, which are carcinogenic and dangerous to unborn children. You can make diesel out of any oil, even used cooking oil.

diesel is cleaner than petrol towards the environment because petrol is thinner and lighter, it floats in the air, diesel is heavy oil and thicker, sinks into the ground

Both about the same,but you get more miles to the gallon with diesel so thats a bit greener.

gas burns cleaner and diesel is cheaper grade has less distilling involved.
