The fish is a glassfish; he's young and probably male. He suddenly became rather lethargic today - first he had spurts of activity in the morning (loop-the-loops and spins and bursts of speed), but for the past hour or so he has been periodically laying on the bottom of the tank. :'(

If you're sure he needs to be euthanized, use clove oil to anesthetize him, the you can either decapitate him or freeze him. Clove oil is the most humane way to anesthetize. I've also heard you can put them in ethanol and they will die peacefully.

I have 3 tanks 55gal 75gal and 10gal Fish will act this way. Just keep an eye on him. If he continues like this for a day or two he might be sick. If you can put him in a tank alone.

two choices. what is best for you or what is best for the fish.

1. instant death for the fish - catch him in the net and then smack the net and fish hard against a hard surface. this will kill him instantly.

2. slower death for the fish (but you can sleep at night). put him in a cup of aquarium water and add the same volume of soda water. place in the freezer and he will die.

number 1 doesn't sound like fun but it is the best and fastest way to put him out of his misery.

my betas lke to lay so still at the bottom of the tank i think they are dead all the time so i move the tank around a little bit to see if they'll move and usually do. as long as its not upside down its alive, but maybe its sick or the water temp is off.

as many others have said, your fish probably isn't dying...but if it continues for a few more days, then mix it in with a cup of baking soda...you could also put it in another cup to let it heal before it dies...give your fish time.

You can euthanize him. Mix baking soda and water together in a cup or bowl and place him in it and he will die instantly. This is what many pet stores do for sick and dying fish.

Make sure to put a lot of baking soda in it and mix it well.

If your fish really is dying (and it might not be) I recommend clove oil, too. It puts them out and then you can put them in the freezer and they just don't wake up. No pain that way.
