Get some slug and snail bait. The kind I use comes in little pellets. Throw
it around where they congregate. You're supposed to wet the pellets a little bit after that to soften them up. The beer idea works great also but that's more
of a novelty thing because you have way too many slugs and snails for that -
you'd need to have bowls all over the place to do an effective job. By the time
you spend the money on the beer and bowls + your time, it's better to buy
the bait.

You must always have had slugs and snails, but the original ones have been having hanky-panky! They have just been hiding under the foliage, stones, ornaments, slabs, etc.
Salt is NOT a good deterrent for two reasons:
1)as you have discovered, their numbers eventually build up again and it is cruel.
2) the salt poisons the soil.
Buy a head torch, rubber gloves and a bucket. Then, after dark, out you go into the garden and pick up as many as you possibly can. Don't dump them at the far end of the garden, or over the neighbours' wall as they will only migrate back to their favourite patch!. Instead, take them for a walk to the nearest wood and release them there. Keep doing this until the numbers are down considerably
Leave some snails for the blackbirds and starlings if you enjoy birdlife in your garden.

Lots of rain normally brings out the slugs and snails. The best deterrent is to encourage hedgehogs into the garden - they love them! If they aren't doing much damage to your plants then do you mind them being there anyway?

Go out there whenever it's raining - you'll soon get the numbers down. Some plants do attract them, yes - I tore one out that did so.

start putting out bird food and plates of dog meat -that will encourage birds and hedgehogs to come and eat them. Use pellets - but animal friendly ones. They are more expensive but work just as well and will not harm any wild or domestic animals

They've always been there, but the wet weather had coaxed them out of their hiding places. You can have a reign of terror with a packet of salt.
