I'm trying to do this with a naked eye. I know that females are larger than males. But I can't remember if the males have a larger darker band on their bodies or females.

Drasopihlia melanogaster males tend to have a smaller, rounder abdomen with distinctive sex pilli on their front legs.

Females conversely are larger, tend to be lighter in color, and have now sex pilli

Females have a ovipositor

I don't know about fruit flies, but I tried moths once. I've heard people talk about moth balls , but I couldn't see the littles things .
