Thomas Jefferson. The Jefferson Bible.

Thomas Jefferson edited "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth," informally known as "The Jefferson Bible"

Miracles and references to the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus are notably absent from the Jefferson Bible. The Bible begins with an account of Jesus's birth without references to angels, genealogy, or prophecy. The work ends with the words: "Now, in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus. And rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed." There is no mention of the resurrection.

Prior to "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth," Jefferson had made an earlier abstraction of the words of Jesus entitled "The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth."

George Bush is coming out with his own version soon though - of course since he can't write a coherant sentence, it will be ghost-written. It will be short. Probably just be along the lines of "If you don't like someone, find a reason to go to war with their country and remove them from power. Thus sayeth I, George the God Bush."

And, if he really feels creative, he might add in his version of the 10 Commandments as well:

10. Thou shalt have no other God before thee except I, George.
9. Thou shalt pollute the environment by relaxing environmental controls on big polluters.
8. Thou shalt ignore hurricane victims for they should know better than to live in such an area.
7. Thou shalt have standardized testing in all schools so kids will know only how to take a test - nothing else.
6. Thou shalt respect the Big Oil companies.
5. Honor thy father and mother - particularly thy father if he got thee out of military service during wartime.
4. Remember thy brother so he mayest steal an election for you and get you appointed president.
3. Thou shalt snort cocaine regularly for clarity of thought.
2. Bless those who are pedophiles for they are likely Republicans.
1. Remember above all else - war is good.

Jefferson never "published" his version of the bible. He prepared it for his own edification, and shared it with a very few family members and close friends. Of course, it became public later.

Jefferson didn't cut out Jesus, he cut out the stories of Jesus' miracles and other supernatural references. Jefferson argued, in a delightful letter to Benjamin Rush, that Jesus was an improvement over the Greeks and Moses as an ethics theorizer, and that he'd be improved upon, too. In the letter, he declares Jesus was not divine, and wanted us to be Christians only the sense that we love our neighbor as ourselves.

Have you read it? It's got some pretty cool notions.

It does come dangerously close to depicted total religious freedom, though. Something we just can't have in the good ole' USSA.
