If you're left-handed, start on the right and go "clocwise"
If you're right-handed, start on the left moving "counter-clockwise"

If you have a fancy belt buckle, and put it on the "left-handed" way in this right-handed world, it'll likely be upside-down.

Wrong way round, I think.
By convention, men have the buckle to the left.

all i know is what they taught us in boot camp and that is start going through the left side loops on around and buckle from right to left

You need to put the bottom side topwards and the left rightways.
