Air bags supplement the safety belt by reducing the chance that the occupant's head and upper body will strike some part of the vehicle's interior. They also help reduce the risk of serious injury by distributing crash forces more evenly across the occupant's body.
"One recent study concluded that as many as 6,000 lives have been saved as a result of airbags." ([2])
However, the exact number of lives saved is almost impossible to calculate.

During a head-on collision (brick wall or another car) there are actually two collisions when there are no restraints. First the car hits the wall and stops suddenly then the passengers continue to fly forward hitting the dashboard (second collision) and stop suddenly. Although properly worn seat belts provide restraint the body impact is concentrated at the belts. An airbag inflates instantly and spreads out the impact area on the body causing less local stress.
