I have several perennials (roses etc) in clay pots on a rooftop garden. How can I best protect them for the upcoming Canadian winter? Should I bring them indoors, or wrap them in heavy plastic and leave them outdoors, near the house for "warmth"? Or is there something else I could/should be doing?

Potted plants will rarely surive winter no matter how well you wrap them. Because the roots are in pots, they are not below ground where the soil temperature remains warmer and is often insulated by snow. The roots in potted plants freeze afte a week or so of below 32 degrees. Bringing them indoors can help. I bring in miniature roses but I prune them severely. The transition from outside to in often stresses the plant so pruning allows the plant to adjust to the new environment.

Since they're such delicate plants, u should definitely bring them inside. Plastic doesn't help insulate plants the way u think it would--if u ever leave anything outdoors (esp in a Canadian winter), be sure to use old sheets or something like that.

i think of that, like it or not, mulch is the appropriate answer for winterizing. so a strategies as protecting the branches.. i does not complication approximately them. Willows circulate dormant, so they ought to be large in the climate. notably, verify that your backyard gets some water over the wintry climate. The roots ought to stay moist. Drought is extra of a plant killer than chilly. in the floor, there is moisture attainable almost each and every of the time. In rooftops purposes, the soil would be dessicated by making use of wind and solar. Water your soil if there is not any precipitation for over a week. seems surprising to water dormant flora, yet you gotta do it! one extra element: Leaves at the instant are not the excellent selection for mulch using blowing difficulty.. yet in addition they're going to decompose and would alter the form of your potting soil. there is fertilizer fee in them, in spite of the fact that it is not that lots. Granular, controlled launch fertilizer is a extra valuable, extra predictable thank you to feed your flora. Your rooftop flora ought to in all possibility use some nutrition too! stable success!
