Advantage: the probability that the root cause is included keeps increasing with each new brainstorming idea.

Disadvantage: none really - when it comes to the critical thinking phase, the list can be shortened quickly.

Using objective tools to evaluate the alternatives will lead us to the solution that we can manage and afford, and sometimes can even show us that we are trying to solve the wrong problem. For example, mother keeps complaining that the neighbor keeps slamming his car doors over and over. Problem statement: How can we get the neighbor to close the car doors less noisily? As we focus on this problem, we will reach a point where we realize that the problem is not the neighbor's noise, but mother's reaction to the noise. Possible solution: move mother to the other end of the house. ;-)

Exhaustively it might always be disadvantageous to follow a chain of causation in that it never seems to stop. I'm not sure the two parts written above have anything to do with one another. If they do, then I have missed it.
