Broiler chickens are slaughtered at approx 42 days old (6 weeks), by which time they've gone from 40g day old chicks to 2kg.

Incidentally, hens bred for laying eggs generally get slaughtered at 90 weeks of age...thats about 18 months old.

Yeah, it depends on whether Bernard manning or the Colonel happen to be in the vicinity at the time. Either way, they shouldn't be making any plans for the future. Even plans for later that day might be a bit optimistic.

it is exactly six weeks from hatching to processing. unfortunate, unlikely but true. due to the unbelievable demand for chicken, the birds in the shops, kfc etc are exactly 6 weeks old, you can imagine what they are fed to bring them on so quickly. I have chickens at home and they are not mature until around 5/6 months. I have birds that are 7 years old.

I had one big old hen who lived to 11 tears.
She was a buff orpington who was an apathetic layer but was a great sitter and raised several broods including ducks.
