Ties serve no useful purpose, its time we dispensed with them.

actually the tie is only about 100 yrs old that has turned into a modern day fashion accessory for men. the tie is a replacement for the ascot which is a replacement for the bola cord tie. the bola dates back to ancient Rome and was worn as a sign of rank or social status. men wore cloaks/clothes that indicated their profession and sometimes class. that is where the Bible verse comes from that states that a woman should not wear men's clothing. in other words a woman was not allowed to have a profession, a job or be involved in politics. as the Roman empire spread through Europe the kings and noblemen adapted the use of the bola. now here is where there is a difference of opinion as to how the bola became the necktie of today. some believe that it was meant to protect expensive white shirts from food spots. one could change a tie easier that buy a new formal shirt. others believe that buttons were made from pieces of bone or wood and were not very attractive. they were also lost easily. the necktie would cover up the buttons or lack of them. i don't think the tie is a worthless invention. after all, look where it points.

I think it depends on whether you're referring to the less than fashionable neckwear, or the concept of neither winning nor losing.
As far as fashion goes, there are probably human inventions with less of a point, because, with the exception of the 80's fad of those knitted ties with square bottoms, most other ties have a point on both ends, therefore making them one of the point-ier human inventions.
If we're referring to the lack of a decisive win/loss, the tie is not really an invention, but rather the lack of one. In that instance, the tie represents more of a cop-out. While pointless, this version of a "tie" isn't pointless, so much as anti-climactic.

The fashion Industry's crazy, ever seen what they wear on them catwalks? Some things stick, others don't. A lot of women like it though, they think it makes a man look more proffesional, which probably means he earns good money, well enough to buy to buy a suit anyway, so hence he has spare cash to buy other things. It's all subconcious but that's pretty much their line of thought

I have a theory about ties. I think they first came about because a tailor had some left over cloth he needed to sell. He wrapped around a nobleman's neck and said", All the guys at court are wearing them!" There-by selling all those useless bits of cloth he had around.

I like them - they do look smart and formal. Although there is a lot to be said about a guy without a tie on a la Richard Branson.
I'm glad I don't have to wear one tho.

Not at all.

I had to wear a tie at school (and I'm a girl) and I really liked it.

Besides, once you know how to tie on it's easy and saves men from having to think about what they're going to wear that day! ;)

Hell,!!!!, no . The most pointless human invention, was points for answering questions, did people i.e., ( y**h*o ) really think that we are so shallow, we would not respond to people in need, without the incentive, of , wait for it, ......two whole points. Guess it just kind of makes you feel real warm inside to have helped a person in need.( and knowing that two points are ours, sleep well tonight, knowing that I have done my bit for humanity, ), well the real people, know the truth, we don't need points to reach out to someone in need, .........We are here,, points, don't make me answer, .......People do!!!!

No I think it is cute. The most pointless is or are thongs.

I just changed my mind because SSIRREN made me think of Jerry Spinger show where all these fools are left with ties and no shirts.

No, the most pointless invention ever would be Laurence Llewellyn Bowen.
