Does it somehow have something to do with social class? The fact that the middle classes supposedly being more cerebral identify with a more literate form of stimulation, the written word and regard this as a erotica but look down upon the working man's visual stimulation and judge this to be mere pornography.

For me pornography is classless and is about several things. At best it is about depersonalisation – using someone as a lust object at worst its about abuse. The problem is, that in a society where there is little intimacy there is no “lightning rod” to ground sexual energy and there isn't much wisdom about healthy sexuality and respect for ourselves or others. As people become desensitised or obsessed it gets pretty perverse.

Seems to me that sex act is not pornographic unless the person watching doesn't know healthy sex or lives in a culture of repression / extreme proprietary/ guilt in which case it can be very confronting.

Thats why porn was used during the second world war. It was easy to isolate people from each other because it generated guilt, anger and violence.

Erotica? Maybe its a middle class concept. Maybe it describes sex that is healthy ie playful, respectful, loving.

The difference between erotica and pornography is not to do with class, although it can be in the eye of the beholder, erotica is an art whever it be writen, painted, photography or film. For photo erotica please see www.bobcarlosclarke.com/
pornography in comparaison is generaly low brow and crass see www.sexclub.co.uk/ although there is not a definet line between the two they do blur at the edges.

Erotica includes pornography since it's all sexual stimulation, but it's more general in that it encompasses more than what you can find online at porn sites. Erotica can also be romance novels, fanfiction, and anything else that gets you off versus just visual things (though some do refer to smut writing as porn, too). Plus, it's a nicer-sounding term, though I myself prefer saying porn or hot yaoi... yeah, don't look up the latter if you don't already know what it is. lol

Erotica is not just the written word, it also covers photography and film.

I'd differenciate the two by saying that I would classify images of people making love as erotica and images of people f**king as pornography.

Erotica , either leaves something to the imagination, or where it may not, would be an art form. Pornography has little to do with art, only sexual gratification.

Erotica is the modern word used to describe the portrayal of human sensuality and sexuality with high-art aspirations, differentiating such work from commercial pornography.

Erotica is the expression of sexual feelings and emotions. Pornography is the depiction of sexual acts with the express intent to get you off. If erotica gets you off, then it's merely a by-product.
