I can't find "substitution" on any of my coping mechanism lists, but perhaps you are referring to "displacement". This is when you "take it out on someone else" to cope. Like you are mad at someone at work and you come home and yell at your kids.

drugs and alcohol...no just kidding. It's odd to me that people ask a question and don't give atleast a few details. It really depends on what you're trying to cope with.
