You should be writing about things that they are going to be experiencing in their own lives, and may need guidance on.

For instance, a lot of kids come from single parent families. You could try to handle that circumstance. Or maybe a single Mom is getting married for the first time. Or you could write a story about blending families, and dealing with new step-moms or step-dads.

You could also try to handle the scenario of a kid growing up in a family where an older brother may be into gangs, and how it affects the other members of the family. And everything they do to try to keep the younger kid from going the same way.

Or you could write about kids dealing with the possible death of a parent from Cancer or some other life-threatening disease. All the emotional turmoil that kid will go through, and who to seek help from, and learning how to deal with the emotions.

Life experiences, and showing kids how to handle them, or at least steering them in the proper direction for dealing with them. These are what children's books need to deal with.

But you should always write from a position of strength, because it will come through in the writing. If you don't know a situation and how to deal with it, you should not be attempting to write about it. It would be the same as attempting to tell a surgeon how an operation should be done, when you have no medical training.

Any simple, yet important life lesson will work. Like being honest, finding a lost dog (perseverance), sharing, accepting other people who are different, earning money, table manners (in a fun presentation). This is a really good question! The possibilities are truly endless. What age range are you planning to target? That might aide in finding more age specific ideas. I hope these help spark some ideas for you. And good luck with writing, its really refreshing to hear about authors in this age of instant media!! :-)
