Without going into a long drawn out debate on this, I think that there is a significant difference between choosing to pronounce words improperly and not physically being able to pronounce words properly. Hence, the need for the field of speech therapy. (By the way, I am African-American).

As a Speech Pathologist with 34 years of experience:
First of all NO One and I mean no one can force yur child into speech therapy without your written approval. If someone does they are breaking a federal law (IDEA) Individual Diasabilty education act states that a parent must give permission for a child to be placed in therapy. Secondly, to answer your question regarding African-American speech patterns they are considered errors of dialect and not speech or articulation errors. The type of speech you describe or idiomatic for a certain culture. In this case the African American but there are sounds and substitution common in the Hispanic dialect that when a child starst school and uses they are not placed in speech either.

My mother was trained as a Speech Therapist -- and the purpose of a Speech Therapist is to provide support services for any person with some form of spoken language disability -- through such genetic conditions as Cleft Palate (which I had as a child -- and yes, it was surgically treated -- then I had speech therapy), those with vocal cord problems, stutterers, those folks who have had some injury to their speech centers, and other related conditions.

This is MUCH DIFFERENT than deliberately mis-pronouncing words without any underlying medical problem affecting their speech processes. There is no way that Speech Therapy is going to help this situation -- for it is NOT a medical issue that causes their speech centers or speech to be affected.

Its not considered a speech problem because it is SLANG. Not a speech issue. People are usually born with speech PROBLEMS and it is something they need to practice to overcome.

Much different than slang. And what does that have to do with your daughters speech therapy exactly? Its two different issues.

There is a class to overcome slang. Its called English and its taught in highschool. People can choose if they want to speak with proper english or not and that is their business.

And yes I agree abou the Southerners. That is the same issue. Or any other people from other parts of the country that talk with different slangs.

This subject is too funny. Speech Therapy and lack of proper fundamental education are two totally different things. Melody, what you're asking isn't about impediments, slurring because of mouth iinjuries or birth defects, or even about mentally promoted speech issues like stuttering-but what you're asking about is directly related to linguistics of social dialects. Asking why black people speak a certain way (or not) is like asking why chinesse americans aren't rushed to a speech therapist when they say "iz sumtin wong weh choo?", or the Vietnamese when they say "fi dala so-jah boy". Poor language habits are just that, speech problems are just that as well-they aren't the same. Apparently you do understand black folks when they speak because you did a good job of translatting. My suggestion is that you get your daughter the help she needs, then get her a voacabulary tutor if you really don't want her using slang like us poor speaking ****** (nah-mean?).

because of the fact some people discovered the observe "black" offensive, so as that they helped create this defective pc rubbish. Black people from the Carribean and Latin united statesa. comprehend that African individuals are people different than themselves. it is not a blanket label. African individuals have their own diverse way of existence, which isn't the comparable as Jamaican, Cuban, Haitian, or Panamanian way of existence. people do no longer desire properly known the adjustments between black people because of the fact it truly is much less annoying to generalize, and a great form of non-blacks are in basic terms frightened approximately offending people. Btw, Drake is Canadian, Souljah Boy is of Panamanian background(in accordance to wikipedia), Miguel Nunez Jr. is Dominican on his father's section, Tiger Woods is extra Asian than black and rejects that label, and that i'm no longer even optimistic Derek Jeter identifies as black no longer to show African American. Immigrants from Africa would desire to took satisfaction in figuring out themselves by potential of nationality as a replace of as African-American. it somewhat is a luxurious A.A's don't have that's an ingredient of the situation.

Most people who speak ebonics (and it's not just restricted to blacks anymore) choose to. They know how to speak properly if they go to a job interview or have to talk to an authority figure, for the most part. It's an image thing.

Also:

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. It's easier to teach a kid how to speak properly than it is to RE-teach someone how to talk.
