Well, if you don't mind booting the O.S. to the computer from a floppy every time you turn it on then I guess there might be a way to do it. I think that I would stick with HDDs.

there are a multitude of reasons hard drives fail early"

1. power fluctuations/brownouts like in Florida where many areas suffer about 8 each day, due to the way the 'grid' is non-existant.

Solution: all my TVs, stereos, computers, run on 12 UPS's!

2. Computer shut down is improper, the filesystem can't write to the hard drive when power is pulled suddenly, by instant power down. Set the CMOS power options for a 4 second delay, and always use soft power off. Log out, and shut down the Operating System from within it!

3. Microsoft FAT and NTFS filesystems thrash drives. Don't run Microsoft, run Linux (EXT3), or ReiserFS, or BSD (UFS) journalized File Systems. http://pclinuxos.com is my favorite distro.

4. Try using a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives, a RAID, so you don't lose data. the file data is striped across the many drives, multiple times, so that it is recovered after the defective drive is replaced, during the RAID rebuild of the new drive. I use old SCSI 10,000 rpm server drives, so it is cheap... eBay!

5. Make sure the power connectors to the hard drives are connected directly, and firmly, not hogged out, and no devices are plugged in, like case fans, between the PSU harness, and the drive! That can be an intermittant power problem!

6. Is the PSU the right rating for all the drives nad other stuff you are powering? Search the web, as there are calculators to help select the correct PSU.

HTH!

Really 6 in 8 years? Sounds like your doing something to damage them. You should be shutting down windows and not just turning the computer off. You should install a small UPS on the computer if you have power outages often. The computer should be kept in an area that allows air flow so it doesn't over heat.

You need to have a hard drive on your computer so you should figure out why you have gone through so many.

6 in 8 years? What the hell are you doing to your computer? They are not delicate. You are doing something very wrong.

tomshardware.com has reviewed a 30gb hd that is solely flash memory. the speed is comparable, but there is no wear and tear because there are no moving parts. follow this, it's what you need, it will be here soon.
