If this is a sudden development it is possible that your video card has failed. When you say "out of whack" - do you mean that the colors are a little off, they are dotty (dithered), or completely bad like psychedelic rainbow?
If you have older software, or kids software games, very often they change the screen color depth to 256 colors. Go to your control panel and check your colors setting. It should read 16 bit or better. If not, try changing it.
If the setting will not change, it is possible that your driver has corrupted, although that's not typical.
Under the Driver tab of the display control panel, do you have the video card's name showing is it it come "generic" description. If it's generic, that usually points to a bad video card or video chip.
Whether you have "onboard" or a video card (AGP or PCI style) you should be able to go to the local use computer store and purchase one for less than $30. You could also buy one on a site like "newegg.com" for an inexpensive price as long as you don't need all the fancy 3D Warcraft abilities....
If the colors are just really strange, you might check to make sure the assistance for the handicapped and visually impaired feature is turned off.
Good luck!

Check if the video cables are loose.
Change resolution/number of colors
Try resetting monitor to factory settings.
Try another monitor if colors are okay, then your monitor needs repairs.
