yes, the line of latitude at zero degrees isthe equator. The line of longtitude that goes through both north and south poles is the Greenwich Meridian from where world time is measured. the same line of longtitude becomes the International date line when it crosses a pole (check a globe)

Because the earth revolves around its own north-south axis. The equator is the midpoint between the poles. Going south to west in opposite sides are the meridians which also determine the time zones. These are merely decided, though.

Good question, the equator is a man made measure so was only placed there as a mid point marker for a planet. There are measurements that are verticall, they are of less significance though I suppose.

because mywife left me for my best mate and I miss him a lot.
I'm also dying for a drink , but I have no money.
My gas is running out and my food supply is reduced to one rasher of bacon and a mouldy piece of cheese.
I have mice in my flat, due to my unhygenic habbits and I'm considering retrieving the poison I put down for them and eating it myself.
So f++k you and your concerns about up and down things

Because it divides the two hemispheres and would not work any other way. It is a line of latitude, the other way would be lines of longitude.

i don't know...maybe it has something to do with the northern hemisphere being elected the top half of the world?...

perhaps since the aborigines are the oldest surviving people on earth, the antipodes should be the top tipodes?

or maybe we are spinning sideways?....
