when the early settlers arrived they saw the original people of the Americas. they noticed that they had red skin, not brown. the reason behind "red skins" was that the indians wore red mud over their skin to protect themselves from the sun. someone at some point said "hey, look at those red skins" and it stuck!

I don't know what they called the Indians. I "do" know that the white man had to be truly jealous of the Indians because of their "free" spirit, as this was "one" thing they couldn't buy or trade anything in the world for. The Indian spirit is priceless! "I" know this for a fact.

A good one would be the reference to Native American women as "squaws". The word actually means 'vagina' and it tied to the practice of using Native American women as nothing more than objects to gratify the white men's sexual needs.

I don't know who your teacher is, but I think he/she is racist. I don't think there was a racist name until much later. Columbus actually thought he had landed in the Far East, therefore, the name Indian. Most likely, in the old documents, they may have called them indigenous or aboriginal ( from the same word we use for the Australian aborigine).
