because it doesn't matter whether we are or not. We are very democratic, elect our decision makers, maintain our tradition and cultural heritage; which in turn attracts a huge amount of tourism, stability and respect. Why change things?

Very good question. It may be because we don't believe in equality, or we believe we're inferior. I know this is a touchy subject, and I won't be popular, but why should these people be treated as superior to us? What makes them better? I think over the years we have seen that they are no better than anyone else - and sometimes worse. But despite this, we have to work so that money can be taken out of our wages and given to them so that they can eat the finest foods, live in palaces, and do whatever they please. But what do they give back? With all the money the Queen has, what is she doing for the country? Why doesn't she take a few million and do something for the underprivileged people in this country who, after all, are her "subjects"? I remember she shed a tear when the royal yacht had to be given away - correction, it didn't have to be given away; she was told that the taxpayers were not going to pay millions for something she used once or twice a year, so she had the option to pay for it out of her own money. Did she? Strangely enough, no. But it was ok for tax money - money which could have served a much higher purpose - to be spent on it. If you really think about it, the whole thing is ridiculous and insulting. maybe a monarch was required centuries ago, but we're out of the Dark Ages and we should have a meritocracy, so that what matters is what you do and what you achieve, not which family you were born into. Most people in this country don't like to think about this. They like the fairytale image of having Kings and Queens and Princes, but they don't think about the cost. I'm not talking about financial cost but the cost to our dignity and our pride.

Note to MGN2006:
Italy has a Royal Family too, and yet, it is a republic.

probably because the power of the monarchy has been steadily eroded at a rate acceptable to the broad range of society. Had the monarchy not adaped and relinquished power it would probably have disappeared long ago. Thhe replacement of absolutist monarchy with constitutional monarchy (giving most powers to parliament) in the late 17th century was probably the major turning point. (see France) and victory in the world wars of the 20th century also assisted (see Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary and numerous others)

OBE - Order of the British Empire!

MBE - Member of the British Empire!

CBE - Commander of the British Empire!

KBE/DBE - Knight or Dame of the British Empire!

Democracy is the illusion of Freedom - We are still an Empire!

In a true Democracy, the people would be able to change, or remove, thier head of state!

Because most UK citizens don't want it to be one, or we'd all be supporting the republican groups and political parties.
