these days there is much talk on India as the fastes growing economy and being the leading economy soon .My worry is do the people who make these statements judge economies on the basis of output and population size . If INDIA will get 100bn more than the leading ecnomies , do they consider the nature of $ they will have to spend on welfare in relation to their geographical and demographic size?

India or China will likely become the largest economy based on total GDP solely due to the large population.

But they are a long, long way off from being largest economy in terms of GDP per capita.

All depends on your point of view.

Who says they have to spend money on welfare? India's caste system is horrendously unfair in resource distribution. Size of economy can be measured on GNP - Gross National Product which takes no measure of individual suffering/age of work force etc. Average income for person is scewed by 113 millionaires and 11222 serfs. The international economy is concerned with distribution equality only so far as it affects political stability.
