I just bought this a couple months ago. The ABS light keeps coming on. My brakes work fine. How worried about this should I be? Or what causes it to randomly come on? And how expensive will this be to even have checked out??

chefgrill,

your brakes should continue to work fine. the antilock brake system however, will not work fine until the repair is made and trouble codes erased.
get the problem fixed soon although its not a problem that will prevent you from driving it to the repair station.
it may come on randomly because the processor loses the signal from a sensor intermittenly.

to be honest, its probably the sensor in the differential, if you want to take a cheap stab in the dark. i sell lots and lots of these.
part # F85Z 2L373 AC
list price as of 07oct06 is $22.95

otherwise it can be a front wheel speed sensor
part # F3TZ 2C204 BA (for 4x4 explorer's)
list price $74.47

remember,

*change your brake fluid every TWO years

happy motoring!

Cost is about 105 per hour at the Ford Dealer. The problem could be a wheel sensor and is an easy fix. The brakes will be fine ABS keeps you from locking up wheels in a panic stop. I have run mine 6 years that way.

i honestly do no longer think of the alternator is the subject in the experience that your no longer having concern at the same time as its working. And why might the alternator could shop the battery charged while the motor vehicle is close OFF? This seems to be something that a number of the previous solutions appeared to have over appeared. (those human beings declare to be mechanics, ha) My opinion, your battery is turning out to be previous or there is a few twine unfastened and/or worn that's final a circuit and needs to be found and changed. verify for moist spots on your battery and in case you have a trailer hitch that doesn't get used oftentimes, verify for corrosion in the wires back there under the bumper. That corrosion would additionally reason a closed circuit. I honestly have the comparable truck of the comparable 12 months and that replace into my venture. sturdy success with yours!

This light is coming on to let you know that something is wrong with your ABS system. This is a soft code that can be read at the dealership. Your breaks will still work but in an emergency the ABS may not work. If this continues and is not looked at the light may stay on all the time this is a hard code and this mean once again the ABS will not work when needed. I don't know the cost to fix it but I know you can go to the dealership and ask what it costs to have a code read, it takes about 1 minute and they can then tell you what is wrong and what it will cost to fix. In the area that I live in is costs about $40.00 to have a code read at the dealership. It is worth it.

If 4 wheel ABS unplug the brake computer,or it can burn up the brakes. If rear anti lock, might be rear shoes worn, or sensor is dirty. I would not worry. 4 wheel ABS computers are higher than the car is worth.

It is common for the Explorer to have this problem and it usualy is the Pick-up/Sensor located on the top of the rear end. It is held in by a 10mm bolt, wiggle carefully and remove, install new
unit and lubricate the "o" ring seal for ease of installation, install
10mm bolt snuggly. Cheap fix for a anoying problem....
