First of all Windows 98SE, is very old and no longer supported by Microsoft. Microsoft does not even support Windows XP with service pack 1 any longer.

Plus Nortons and Mcafee are the worlds very worse junk and continues to be pure junk for antivirus or antispyware.

Also it is a resource hog even for the latest computers on the market.

Remove Nortons, because it has to be draining all your resorces and would not work even with the latest computers, plus still a hog.

Being I test antvirus/antispyware program in my spare time I can tell you that when you go to add/remove and remove Nortons it will leave over 300 fragments glued to your files and hidden all over your system. (This may or may not cause a conflict).

If you pc is only a pentium 3 you really should purchase an upto date computer Pentium IV. And hope that it comes with Windows XP Prof., or else you will have to purchase the platform.

Microsoft uses a tool now called "WGA", (Windows genuine advantage), They will check the registration key that comes on the side of the box to make sure it is valid and not stolen.

If your new pc comes with the platform make sure the technician installs the platform while you watch as you want him to install some of the critical updates and say, Windows Media Player. If they install, as Microsoft, will check your valid key many times while the installation is downloading, you will know for sure you have a valid key and not getting ripped of on your platform.

For a quick fix, you can try and reboot and start your pc up in a "safe mode", and then scan with Nortons, but I doubt if you will find anything, as Norton does not know a virus when it is right in their face. Or use your serch engine for "free antivirus tool scans". And try an online free scan from an antivirus company that has these tools. There are many. Like Trend Micro.

If you do purchase a new pc, and you don't have the money for an antivirus system download from: http://www.avast.com This is an excellent free antivirus program. The program is free for home use. You wil have to give them your email as they will send you a free registration key good for one year. After one year you must renew the key. Same if you purchase.

If you really want to purchase use what I use and the Government of China uses.

Being a clinical psychiatrist I have a moral and legal obligation to keep my pc 100% clean from all virus/spyware/malware.

I tested every free and purchase antivirus system known. An I found only one that actually works 100%. Never had a virus or spyware in my system in nine years.

Go to, www.filseclab.com and download thier Twister AntiTrojan Virus program. (You will have to pay a small one time fee). You will never have to pay an annual fee for updates, support or new versions. The one time fee is for life. ($29.99)

The software company is located in Beijing, China. They have excellent support, frequent large signature updates an as always all new versions are free. No annual fee for anything.

Comes with a real time scanner that really works. Actually I am quite amazed over the nine years how well it works.

Scans memory on startup.
Real time scanning in the background.
Open any webpage with an embedded trojan/spyware or malware and scanner will clean on the spot. An It is really removed from your system.

Download any kind of program from zips, all compressed files, software files, music, etc, etc, an if there is a hidden embedded trojan, spyware, malware, this program will stop the download and clean. An will advise you to end the download.

Will even find a virus in the installer wizard, like "Wise Installer". And will stop the installation while it is being installed and clean. Plus this program always will trace back who installed the trojan.

I had a trojan in and wizard installer. Twister caught the trojan and stopped the installation. I wrote the origianl company and told them the wizard installer had an embedded trojan to steal your data. The company now uses thier own installer.

You can't beat this software for a one time purchase fee only. Actually I don't know of any antivirus progam that even comes close to this state of the art technology.

All I can say it is worth the one time fee. Your pc cost alot of money and you don't want it destroyed. Plus your privacy is protected at all times.

There is nothing in it for me to praise this program. I tell it like it is. If it is garbage then I will say so.

Good luck to you with this problem.

1) Before you noticed the problem , what did you download? Delete it 2)Download Norton 360 (trial version) and run a full-scan 3) Roll back to last good known configuration

Register, go to the Hijack This Forum, read the instructions on how to post a log, give a brief description of your problem (like you've just typed) and post your log there. The guys in there are fantastic and trustworthy and will guide you through in getting rid of anything nasty from your computer. Good luck!
